The Pets We Abandon

Image
In Pakistan, owning pets especially expensive, high breed ones has sadly become more about social display than responsibility. People are buying pets simply for fun or to follow trends. These pets are gifted like toys on birthdays or kept to make Instagram stories look cute. But what happens when the charm wears off? They throw them out. Just like that. I have personally witnessed this. I know families that kept a kitten only till it was small and “cute” and once it grew up, they dumped it outside their house, on roads, or worse, near trash bins. No one thinks about how that animal feels, how confused and scared it must be to be thrown out of the only home it ever knew. And this is not rare. Most of the rescued cats I have come across are Persian. That is not a coincidence. Abuse of animals is a well-known issue that’s often talked about in media, but abandonment is something that people do not even consider wrong. It is not even seen as cruelty. They think, at least I did not ...

Domestic Abuse in Pakistan | Reasons and factors.

The term domestic commotion refers to the set of abuse that is done by the victim's spouse, relatives, or family members. The rate of suffering from domestic abuse in Pakistan has always been extended. Every one in 5 women suffered from domestic abuse in some kind of form. Approximately 50 percent of married women in Pakistan have suffered some kind of abuse once in their lifetime. Women are killed and beaten daily by their own so-called families. There are several causes and reasons why such practices have become so rationalized.

Following are some of the kinds of abuse Pakistani women are facing:

1) Physical abuse:

Beating your wife is a common practice in Pakistan. Those wannabe men because of their fragile egos torture their wives daily, They abuse them physically. Strangling, Punching, and Slapping are some of the types of physical abuse. Daily we hear such news where a husband beat his wife to the demise.

2) Psychological abuse:

This is a type of abuse where the victim is tortured mentally. Being aggressive, being a narcissist, and neglecting one's rights is a common tradition that is done towards women. Women become psychologically so sick that they even resolve to attempt suicide.

3) Sexual abuse:

Sexual assault refers to committing a sexual act without the consent of others. This is also a common practice in Pakistan. Women face such assault from their own family and their spouses. In many small areas of Pakistan, it is a tradition that family sells their daughters to the person who pays the most. The daughter is given no right.

4) Honour killing:

Honor killing refers to the action of a male member of a family when they kill a female member, and they justify it by blaming the victim that the girl has brought shame to their family by her actions. Honor killing is very common in small areas of Pakistan.

Now, what are the reason that gives rise to these practices?

1) Early marriages:

Early marriages are very common in Pakistan. Parents marry their daughters at such a young age, they barely passed puberty. Now when such young girls get married they are abused by their husbands and their in-laws. They don't have any experience whatsoever. They face domestic violence in every shape. They are tormented in many ways. So early marriages should be prohibited.

2) Parents' negligence:

The reason why married women face domestic abuse is because of their parents and society. In Pakistan, it is a common belief that whatever a husband does, the wife should suffer it for a delighted family. When a woman faces domestic abuse and if she speaks about it most of the time they are discouraged. Parents start to advise their daughters to have tolerance, everything will be alright. Many times women are told that now their parent's home is not their home so they should try to settle in their new home. This gives rise to gender inequality and unintentionally men are told that they can do anything they want.

3) Not nurturing women:

Not giving education to women is also a very common reason why domestic violence is so common. Women should be educated so that they can support themselves on bad days. Educate your daughters, and nurture your daughters about their rights. Education is something that everyone has the right to. Women should be financially independent.

4) Victim blaming:

When a woman stands for herself and talks about the abuse she is facing. Aside from supporting her society just lectures her. They start to blame it on women by saying, 'So what if he beats you, He is also the one who loves you the most',' or It takes two to quarrel '.
We as a society have failed to become human. It takes a lot of courage to stand up for yourself, so please don't be prejudiced and try to support the one who is facing the abuse.

5) Not understanding the difference between culture and Islam:

If we are preachers of Islam then there should not be a single case of domestic abuse. Our religion was the first religion that gives respect and rights to women. Our beloved Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) used to treat his wives with so much love. He never lay a hand on his wives.
He told: 'Fear Allah in respect of women.
Domestic abuse is discouraged in Islam. These cultural norms have made people think that it is regular but it is not. A woman deserves respect.

Conclusion: Domestic abuse by no means should be tolerated. It is a crime,
It is now time that we as a nation start to support and help women against it.

If you have ever suffered any kind of familial abuse, you are strong so you have to fight for yourself, you deserve everything in this world. A character will never change. So help yourself.
