The Pets We Abandon

Image
In Pakistan, owning pets especially expensive, high breed ones has sadly become more about social display than responsibility. People are buying pets simply for fun or to follow trends. These pets are gifted like toys on birthdays or kept to make Instagram stories look cute. But what happens when the charm wears off? They throw them out. Just like that. I have personally witnessed this. I know families that kept a kitten only till it was small and “cute” and once it grew up, they dumped it outside their house, on roads, or worse, near trash bins. No one thinks about how that animal feels, how confused and scared it must be to be thrown out of the only home it ever knew. And this is not rare. Most of the rescued cats I have come across are Persian. That is not a coincidence. Abuse of animals is a well-known issue that’s often talked about in media, but abandonment is something that people do not even consider wrong. It is not even seen as cruelty. They think, at least I did not ...

How to take care of male cat before and after neutering.

Cat neutering care before and after tips:

Introduction :

Neutering is a surgical procedure done to remove the reproductive organ or
testicles of a male cat. In the case of female cats, the procedure is called spaying. Here in this part, we will specifically talk about male cat neutering before and aftercare. The procedure is generally done within 1 to 2 hours. Vets use anesthesia before the procedure. Stitches are typically not needed in neutering. It is not a major surgery but still, our furry babies need some extra care for the proper healing of their wounds. Here are some tips to care for your cats:

1)Don't feed your cat before the surgery:

Vets recommend not to feed anything to the cat before surgery, at least they should be empty stomach for 5 hours before surgery. Don't offer them food or water let them be on empty stomachs as not being on empty stomachs will make them puke during the procedure. And it can be dangerous for cats.

2) Pack the essentials the day before the procedure:

This step is important as it's human nature to forget the basic things when in stress and when you are already under stress it's good that you are packed with all the essentials so that you and your feline baby will be all right. Some of the basic things to pack for the clinic are one soft blanket, one or two clean towels, a carrier, and a cat cone. Most of the time many of these things are provided by the vet but it's always better to have extra things rather than having nothing at all.

3) Let the doctor examine your cat before the checkup:

Make sure your cat has a detailed check-up before the procedure. Your vet will check the cat's temperature and check some other basic things to make sure that the cat is perfectly fine as it could be dangerous for cats to have their procedure when they are not well.

Care tips post-surgery:

Now the procedure has been done. You can keep your cat in the clinic for one night or take him home as recommended by the vet. Now, these are post-surgery tips you should observe for the proper recovery of your feline friend:

1)Keep him in a small space :

After your cat has arrived home post-surgery make sure you keep him away from other pets or kids. Keep him in a small space. There should be a small bed where you should put him. Don't put your cat in high places like the bed as it's very likely that cat will be sedated and so when he will be getting awake he will try to jump from the bed which is very dangerous as he could have a serious injury because of that.

2)Don't force him to eat or drink :

It is normal if your cat is not eating or drinking after surgery don't worry about it. It's normal for cats to lose their appetite after surgery. Offer them half amount of the food that they normally eat. They will surely eat after some hours. But if more than a day has passed and they have not eaten anything try to contact your vet and ask for advice that whether you should schedule a visit or not.

3)Put an e-collar around his neck :

Now, this is an important step as we know that cats like to lick themselves a lot. Now after the surgery your cat will surely feel discomfort and will try to lick the wound site. This can create many problems. This is dangerous for cats. So it is advisable to put an e-collar around your cat's neck for at least 5 to 6 days after the surgery or ask your vet about the days you have to keep the collar on. You can also find cat clothes that serve as an alternative for e collars they also help to prevent cats from licking their wounds.

4)Check his wound site :

After the procedure, the first day is crucial so try to take extra care of your furry baby even at night to make sure he is doing good. If possible put an all-nighter. Also, check his wound site regularly to see if it's healing or not. Clicking a picture after surgery will also give you an idea of how your cat's wound is. Some bleeding in urine is normal but if the wound site is bleeding after your cat jumped immediately rushed to the hospital.

5) Avoid any playtime :

Make sure all tree houses, fur toys, or any other kind of cat toys are hidden. Don't play with your cat at least for a week after his surgery. This will make his recovery very difficult and can be dangerous for him.

6) Use of litter box :

After surgery, your cat likely would not use the litter box mainly because he would be sedated or he would not have control mainly because of the administration of fluids. So make sure to have this thing in your mind. Now the question is can a cat use normal litter after surgery? Some vets disagree they recommend shredding tiny pieces of newspaper and using them as litter in a litter box while others say it's okay to use the normal litter but it is recommended to be on the safe side and do some precautions and use the newspaper method

7) Follow-up checkups :

Follow-up checkups are necessary so that you can examine whether the wound is healing or not. Some vets recommend painkiller procedures for two or three days after surgery. Sometimes it is good for cats and sometimes not. So make sure to talk to your vet about whether it's necessary or not.

Conclusion :

Neutering your cat is not a big procedure but still, for proper recovery of your cat, you have to make sure you follow all these tips. Don't worry your baby will be alright. Don't rush their recovery they will take some time to recover.

Make sure you ask all the questions from the vet. And in case you feel like your furry baby is continuously lethargic, not eating, or the wound is not healing, please contact the clinic fast. Best of luck.
