The Pets We Abandon

Image
In Pakistan, owning pets especially expensive, high breed ones has sadly become more about social display than responsibility. People are buying pets simply for fun or to follow trends. These pets are gifted like toys on birthdays or kept to make Instagram stories look cute. But what happens when the charm wears off? They throw them out. Just like that. I have personally witnessed this. I know families that kept a kitten only till it was small and “cute” and once it grew up, they dumped it outside their house, on roads, or worse, near trash bins. No one thinks about how that animal feels, how confused and scared it must be to be thrown out of the only home it ever knew. And this is not rare. Most of the rescued cats I have come across are Persian. That is not a coincidence. Abuse of animals is a well-known issue that’s often talked about in media, but abandonment is something that people do not even consider wrong. It is not even seen as cruelty. They think, at least I did not ...

How to support individuals facing mental health crisis :

Nothing is more heartbreaking than watching someone close to you suffering from mental illness. It becomes very complicated. You feel distant and alone because you can't do anything for them. In such cases, you can't seem to know how you can help them. So in this post, I will share tips that can make sufferers feel better and you will be able to perform your responsibility.

Following are some of the ways :

1)Listen to them :

2) Don't be overly sympathized:

3) Never force them to talk:

4) Keep that information confidential:

5) Invite them everywhere:

6)Don't be judgemental :

7) Make them feel valid:

1) Listen to them :

People will rarely tell you about their mental illness. Mostly their friends or family members confront them after seeing their symptoms. Now if someone trusts you, Listen to them. Just listen to all their heart. First, listen to what they have in their mind. Avoid talking back.

2) Don't be overly sympathized:

Now you have to make sure that you make them feel valid. But don't overdo it. Don't be overly sympathetic. This will make them feel very uncomfortable. Don't treat them like children.

3)Never force them to talk :

Never force someone to open up to you. If you know that the person is not well. Try to make them feel good, help them, and tell them you are always available for them. You can show that I am always available for listening, but don't force them.

4)Keep that information confidential :

Never let anyone else know about their condition unless they are willing to. They trusted you so don't break their trust, because many people are not comfortable sharing their illness. In some cases telling others becomes necessary, especially in cases you know they will hurt themselves.

5)Invite them everywhere:

We know when suffering from depression or any other mental health illness. The sufferer doesn't want to be a part of social gatherings. But remember never forget to invite your friends when they are in such a condition. Attending the party or not is their own choice but they should know that their friends want them everywhere. They have not been left behind.

6)Avoid judgment

Don't judge them. Never make such comments that can hurt them. Remember they are in pain. Don't blackmail them emotionally by saying things like think about others. It's not their duty.

7)Make them feel valid:

The most important thing is to make them feel valued. Tell them how much this world has for them, they are valid. Their worth is undeniable. Try to give them time. You can also try to make them have therapy sessions.

Conclusion: Witnessing your close one suffer like that is indeed difficult. We must help them, but remember you can't do anything except try so don't be hard on yourself.
